£25 Million Investment Yields Major Road Repairs Across Wales

20-10-2025

The Welsh Government has announced significant progress in its road maintenance initiative, reporting that more than 130,000 potholes have been fixed or prevented across 266 miles of Welsh roads in the last six months. The 'Fixing our roads' program, which began in April, represents a comprehensive effort to address long-standing infrastructure issues throughout the country through close collaboration between the government and local councils.

Local authorities have been particularly active in the initiative, with the local government borrowing initiative enabling councils to address approximately 107,000 potholes across 216 miles of local roads. Simultaneously, work on the Strategic Road Network has seen around 24,000 potholes fixed or prevented on more than 50 miles of roadway, supported by direct Welsh Government funding. The program has already completed 480 local resurfacing schemes and 20 trunk road resurfacing projects nationwide.

Specific projects are already demonstrating tangible benefits to communities across Wales. Schemes such as the A548 from Abergele to Llanfair Talhaiarn in Conwy and Station Road from Rogiet to near Shakespeare Road in Caldicot, Monmouthshire, are cited as examples of work making substantial differences in local areas. Additional Strategic Road Network projects currently underway include the A487 in Eglwyswrw, the A55 from Dobbs Hill to Ewloe in Flintshire, and the A40 Arnold's Hill in Pembrokeshire.

Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, emphasized the government's commitment to the program, stating that fixing roads remains a priority. "We are only six months into this programme, but I am delighted with the fantastic progress that's been made so far, and there's a lot more to come," Skates said. He noted that the results reflect the additional £25 million investment in main roads and support provided to local authorities, with the work already making a real difference to communities across Wales by addressing long-standing issues and building more resilient road infrastructure for the future.
