British Steel Embarks on Hiring Spree Following Government Intervention

08-05-2025

British Steel, now under the operational control of the UK government, has announced plans to significantly increase its production capacity, accompanied by a recruitment drive for over 180 new staff. This move marks a pivotal shift for the company, which was previously facing the threat of closure under its Chinese owners, Jingye Group. The government's intervention in April has not only safeguarded the jobs of the existing 3,000 employees but also paved the way for expansion, signaling a renewed confidence in the future of the UK's steel industry.

The company, which operates the country's last two remaining blast furnaces in Scunthorpe, eastern England, is set to ramp up iron and steel production in the coming months. This decision comes after securing the necessary raw materials to maintain a two-blast furnace operation, a critical step towards achieving its ambition of becoming one of the world's leading steel manufacturers. The recruitment drive spans a wide range of roles, from engineering and manufacturing to business functions, offering opportunities in Scunthorpe, Teesside, and Skinningrove.

Interim chief executive Allan Bell emphasized the company's commitment to meeting customer demand and strengthening its position in the global market. "With the backing of the UK Government, we are focused on cementing British Steel as one of the world's leading manufacturers of steel," Bell stated. The announcement has been welcomed by workers and the wider communities, highlighting the government's role in protecting and revitalizing key industries.

Despite the positive developments, challenges remain, including high energy costs in the UK and a global steel glut. Additionally, the imposition of a 25% tariff on steel imports by the US under President Donald Trump has dealt a blow to British Steel's export prospects. The UK government is currently negotiating a trade deal with the US, aiming to reduce these tariffs and secure a more favorable position for British exporters. As British Steel moves forward with its expansion plans, the focus will be on overcoming these hurdles to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.
