City Thameslink Tops List of Britain's Worst Stations for Cancellations

23-09-2025

The UK's railway network is facing increased scrutiny as new data reveals that approximately one in every thirteen scheduled train stops was cancelled over the past year. According to figures from the Office of Rail and Road analyzed by the BBC, about three million of the scheduled 89 million train stops across Britain failed to operate as planned. The overall cancellation rate for the past year stood at 3.3%, slightly higher than the previous year's rate of 3.2%, despite recent improvements in the most recent four-week period.

City Thameslink station in London has been identified as having the worst cancellation record among Britain's busiest railway stations, with 7.7% of its nearly 150,000 scheduled stops cancelled in the year to August. The station, managed by Thameslink, saw approximately one in thirteen trains fail to stop as scheduled. Other stations experiencing significant disruption include Earlswood and Salfords in Surrey, both recording cancellation rates of 9.8%, though these stations handle fewer trains than major hubs like City Thameslink.

Passengers have expressed growing frustration with the unreliable service. Cat Edge, a 23-year-old student from Surrey, described how cancellations at her local Earlswood station regularly cause her to arrive late for university classes. "It does feel like I miss out and come across poorly," she said. "It's difficult with professors who themselves have busy schedules, trying to say, 'oh, can I have a 20-minute lenience window?' It's quite embarrassing." Other commuters reported similar experiences, with some noting they must frequently check service status before leaving home or arrange alternative transportation.

The government is implementing what it describes as the biggest overhaul of the railways in a generation, with the establishment of Great British Railways, a new arm's length body that will oversee the rail system in England, Wales, and Scotland. While legislation to formally establish the new body awaits parliamentary approval, the government aims to have all services publicly owned by the end of 2027. Industry representatives acknowledge the challenges, with a Rail Delivery Group spokesperson stating that operators "spare no effort to maintain as many services as possible" while citing extreme weather, infrastructure problems, and trespassing as contributing factors to ongoing disruptions.
