Green Hydrogen Facility at Hunterston Set to Boost Ayrshire Economy and Renewable Energy Transition

29-05-2025

In a significant move towards renewable energy development, Statkraft, the Norwegian state-owned hydropower firm, has partnered with Clydeport, a subsidiary of Peel Ports Group, to explore the potential of a green hydrogen production and export facility at the Hunterston Port and Resource Campus (PARC) site in Ayrshire, Scotland. This collaboration comes despite Statkraft's recent announcement to halt new green hydrogen projects due to market uncertainties, underscoring the company's commitment to projects already in the pipeline.

The proposed facility aims to produce, store, and export hydrogen, converting it into ammonia for international shipment via the site's existing jetty. This initiative not only represents a pivotal step in the energy transition but also promises to rejuvenate a former industrial site, contributing to local economic growth and job creation. Lewis McIntyre, Managing Director of Port Services at Peel Ports Group, highlighted the project's potential to bring a brownfield site back into economic use while addressing the urgent need for investment and employment in the region.

Stuart Marley, Statkraft's Principal Hydrogen Project Manager, emphasized the strategic importance of Hunterston's location and infrastructure for the project. He pointed out that hydrogen plays a crucial role in reducing emissions from carbon-intensive industries, aligning with broader environmental goals. Despite the challenges posed by market volatility, the advancement of the Hunterston project reflects a shared vision between Statkraft and Peel Ports Group for a sustainable energy future.

The Hunterston hydrogen project stands as a testament to the resilience of renewable energy initiatives in the face of economic uncertainties. By leveraging existing infrastructure and focusing on the production of green hydrogen, the partners aim to set a benchmark for future developments in the sector. As the project progresses, it will undoubtedly attract attention from both the energy industry and local communities eager for economic revitalization and environmental sustainability.
