North East's Film Studio Dream Faces Funding Hurdle as Initial Investor Exits

The ambitious Crown Works Studios project in Sunderland, envisioned to transform the North East into a hub for blockbuster film and TV production, is on the hunt for new investors following the withdrawal of its initial financial backer, Cain International. The £450 million project, which promises to create thousands of jobs, has seen its development plans adjusted as local authorities and partners strive to keep the dream alive.

Fulwell 73, the global entertainment company behind hits like 'The Late Late Show with James Corden', remains a staunch supporter of the scheme, despite the setback. The joint venture, FulwellCain, had initially aimed to construct 19 sound stages on the banks of the River Wear. Now, with Cain International stepping back, the project's proposals are being presented to the investment market in hopes of securing a new developer and funder by the end of the year.

Local leaders, including Sunderland City Council leader Michael Mordey, have expressed unwavering confidence in the project's future. Preparatory works, funded by public money, are already underway near the Northern Spire Bridge, signaling the region's commitment to realizing this game-changing opportunity. The first phase of the development, which includes four sound stages and ancillary facilities, has received detailed planning approval, marking a significant step forward.

Lewis Atkinson, Labour MP for Sunderland Central, emphasized the transformative potential of the Crown Works Studios, describing it as a 'once-in-a-generation opportunity' to position Sunderland at the forefront of the UK's creative economy. With collaborative efforts between the government, council, and the North East Combined Authority, the project continues to move forward, embodying the region's resilience and ambition to attract global film and TV production to its shores.
