Queen's University Belfast and the Police Service of Northern Ireland have launched a joint initiative to address drink spiking concerns as students return for the new academic year. The Drink Check project will see specialist drink spiking test kits distributed to 33 bars and clubs across Belfast, with the university's neighborhood engagement team spearheading the effort following concerns raised by students about potential drink tampering.
The initiative includes visible deterrents such as testing kits and awareness campaigns designed to support student safety during nightlife activities. Each participating venue will display posters indicating that drink testing is available on-site, and bars have been supplied with drink testing strips that can detect common spiking substances. Queen's University purchased the specialist test kits and partnered with PSNI for distribution and management across multiple venues.
Under the program, customers who suspect their drink may have been tampered with can bring it to the bar where staff will perform immediate testing. If results indicate spiking, the PSNI will be notified and launch an investigation, with venue CCTV footage reviewed to help identify responsible individuals. The system aims to provide both preventive measures and responsive action when incidents occur.
Additionally, all participating venues have been provided with 'Ask for Angela' materials, a safety mechanism that allows patrons to use a codeword to discreetly seek help from bar staff when feeling unsafe or vulnerable. Queen's Students' Union President Amy Smith described the initiative as being "about prevention and reassurance," noting that every report will be taken seriously with a bespoke response plan to support victims and pursue offenders.
