Rail Network Chaos: Two People Hit by Trains Cause Widespread Travel Delays

29-09-2025

Major disruption has paralyzed rail services across southern England after two separate incidents where individuals were struck by trains on the Thameslink and Southern networks. The first incident occurred at 9:13 am between Luton and St Albans City, with all lines blocked between these stations as emergency services responded. A second incident was reported at 10:40 am between Haywards Heath and Gatwick Airport, creating a cascade of cancellations and delays throughout the region.

Rail operators have issued stark warnings to passengers, with Thameslink explicitly advising travelers "do not travel" on its services due to multiple incidents across the network. Southern echoed this sentiment, recommending passengers delay any journeys until later in the day where possible. Both companies confirmed that services would be severely disrupted or cancelled until further notice, with initial estimates suggesting disruption could last until at least 1:00 pm.

The impact has been widespread, affecting multiple rail services including Thameslink, Southern, and Gatwick Express. No trains can operate between Luton and St Albans City in either direction, while services between Gatwick Airport, Haywards Heath, and Horsham are also suspended. East Midlands Railway services have been affected by the Luton incident, with trains unable to run between Luton and London St Pancras International.

Gatwick Airport station was evacuated due to overcrowding, with no passengers permitted to enter until further notice. For those already traveling, journey times are expected to take at least 120 minutes longer than usual, with no guarantee of reaching destinations. Rail companies have advised passengers on halted trains to remain onboard and await instructions from staff, while those considering travel have been urged to seek alternative arrangements or postpone their journeys entirely.
