Scottish Whisky Giant Steps into American Market with NYDC Takeover

22-05-2025

The Loch Lomond Group, a renowned name in the Scotch whisky industry, has made a strategic move into the American spirits market by acquiring the New York Distilling Company (NYDC). This acquisition marks a significant expansion for the Scottish company, known for its Loch Lomond and Glen Scotia whiskies, as it diversifies its portfolio to include American whiskeys and gin brands.

NYDC, based in Brooklyn, is celebrated for its Jaywalk Rye Whiskey, which utilizes the historic Horton Rye—a variety that was once prevalent in the New York area during the 17th and 18th centuries but had nearly vanished. The distillery's efforts to revive this heirloom rye, starting from just 10 seeds provided by Cornell University's historic seed bank, highlight a unique aspect of this acquisition. This initiative not only preserves a piece of American distilling history but also adds a distinctive product to Loch Lomond Group's offerings.

Colin Matthews, CEO of Loch Lomond Group, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing the potential for growth both in the U.S. and internationally. The collaboration is expected to leverage Loch Lomond's extensive distribution network and expertise in flavor creation to elevate NYDC's brands, including its signature whiskeys and gins, on a global scale.

Allen Katz and Tom Potter, founders of NYDC, shared their excitement about joining forces with Loch Lomond Group. They highlighted the group's award-winning track record and global presence as key factors that will help introduce NYDC's brands to whiskey enthusiasts worldwide. This acquisition not only signifies Loch Lomond Group's ambition to broaden its market reach but also underscores the growing appreciation for craft spirits with historical significance.
