Tesco Breakfast Fails to Impress in YouTuber's Supermarket Food Challenge

25-09-2025

Gary Hanna, the creator behind the popular Gary Eats YouTube channel, has sparked conversation about the quality of supermarket cafe breakfasts after his comprehensive review of offerings from Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose, and Morrisons. The content creator, who has been systematically evaluating morning meals across major UK retailers, expressed consistent disappointment with what he found during his visits to various supermarket locations.

During his recent visit to Tesco in Byfleet, Surrey, Hanna ordered the Big Breakfast priced at £9.50, but immediately noted shortcomings in the meal's composition. The absence of traditional breakfast components like mushrooms, tomatoes, and fried bread marked what he described as a "poor start" to the dining experience. This pattern of missing elements has been a recurring theme throughout his supermarket breakfast evaluations, suggesting a broader issue with how these establishments approach their morning menus.

Hanna's critique focused particularly on the sausages, which he described as unevenly cooked with some portions "cremated" while others remained undercooked. He characterized them as "cheap, in-house ones" and directly challenged supermarkets to upgrade their offerings by using the higher-quality sausages they already sell on their shelves. The YouTuber's assessment awarded Tesco's breakfast a score of six out of ten, placing it slightly behind Marks and Spencer and Morrisons (both scoring six and a half) but ahead of Waitrose's four-point offering.

While Hanna found some redeeming qualities in the bacon—describing it as "really tasty" despite its "unappealing" appearance—he remained critical of other components. He dismissed the hash browns as mere "plate filler" and suggested supermarkets replace them with fried bread for better flavor. His ongoing campaign highlights growing consumer expectations for quality in supermarket dining experiences, particularly as prices continue to rise across the food service industry.
