UK's Sunniest Spring Brings Bumper Strawberry Harvest

12-06-2025

British strawberry farmers are celebrating an exceptional harvest this year, attributing the success to the record-breaking spring sunshine and warm days. The unique weather conditions have not only accelerated the growth of the strawberries but also enhanced their sweetness and size, making this year's crop one of the most bountiful in recent memory.

James Miller from WB Chambers Farms highlighted that the combination of long periods of sun and cool nights created 'perfect' conditions for the strawberry harvest. The dry and pleasant weather also played a crucial role in boosting insect pollination, which is essential for improving the quality and shape of the berries. This has resulted in strawberries that are not only larger but also sweeter than those harvested in previous years.

Nick Marston, chairman of British Berry Growers, shared his enthusiasm, stating that the weather has led to 'super berry size and super flavour.' With over 30 years of experience in the berry industry, Marston noted that this spring stands out as one of the best, both in terms of weather conditions and the quality of the crop. The exceptional conditions have been a boon for farmers across southeast England, where the majority of the UK's soft fruit farms are located.

However, the Met Office's announcement of the warmest spring since records began in 1884, along with it being the second-sunniest and driest spring in over a century for England, has raised concerns among farmers about potential drought conditions. Despite these challenges, the current strawberry harvest serves as a bright spot, showcasing the resilience of British agriculture in the face of changing climate patterns.
