Cornwall's tourism board Visit Cornwall has entered voluntary liquidation due to what the organization described as "insurmountable financial problems." The private community interest company, responsible for promoting the Duchy as a visitor destination, confirmed the decision after a business review and organizational changes initiated in August. A spokesperson called it an "incredibly difficult decision" but said it was "the only responsible choice" that needed to be made before another round of membership payments was due in two months.
The organization, which represented approximately 500 tourism-related businesses across the county, faced mounting financial pressures that ultimately proved unsustainable. Visit Cornwall's board, consisting of non-executive voluntary directors responsible for the organization's strategic direction, had explored every possible avenue to find a solution, including discussions with funders and key partners. The decision to wind up operations came after extensive efforts to secure the organization's financial future.
A critical factor in the liquidation was the impending end of SPF funding, which has been vital to Visit Cornwall for the last four years and is scheduled to conclude in March 2026 with no replacement program in sight. Combined with the approaching deadline for membership payments, the board determined that immediate action was necessary. Jon Hyatt, chair of Visit Cornwall, emphasized that acting in the best interests of employees and members had been the organization's priority throughout the decision-making process.
The liquidation results in the redundancy of all six employees, though they will receive compensation. Kevin Georgel, chief executive of St Austell Brewery, described the news as "deeply concerning" and noted it marks "a critical moment for Cornwall's visitor economy." The organization leaves behind a legacy of representing, supporting, and promoting Cornwall's tourism sector, with hopes that the industry will unite to create a new voice to fill the void left by Visit Cornwall's departure.
