Andrew Wickham MBE: A Legacy of Transformation in Public Transport

26-05-2025

The transport industry is in mourning following the death of Andrew Wickham MBE, the managing director of Go South Coast, after a long illness. Wickham, a revered figure in the public transport sector, dedicated nearly four decades to improving bus services across the UK, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and leadership that has significantly impacted the industry.

Wickham's career began at Brighton Borough Transport while he was still a student at Aston University, where he graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Transport Operation and Planning in 1987. Over the years, he held various roles across the country, including positions at London General Transport Services and Plymouth Citybus, before being appointed managing director of Go South Coast in 2011. Under his leadership, the company, which includes operators such as Southern Vectis, Morebus, and Salisbury Reds, received numerous accolades, including Large Operator of the Year multiple times.

Known for his humility and dedication, Wickham often credited his team for the company's successes. His vision and leadership not only improved services but also increased the popularity of bus travel along the south coast, with usage levels now among the highest in the UK. His contributions to the industry were recognized with an MBE, awarded by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal for services to the bus industry.

Andrew Wickham MBE's passing has left a void in the transport industry and among those who knew him. Colleagues remember him as a devoted family man and a passionate advocate for public transport, whose impact will be felt for years to come. The thoughts of the entire Go South Coast team and the wider transport community are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
